Some of the most meaningful work we do at Knoll doesn't start with a blank canvas. It starts with something already loved — a ring worn so faithfully over the years that the metal has softened, the setting has aged, and the original design, beautiful as it once was, no longer feels quite right for the person wearing it.
That's exactly where this story begins.
A customer came to us with an aquamarine ring that had been with her for years. The stone was hers, the memories were hers, but the setting — an older style with heavier lines — no longer reflected who she was. She knew she wanted something updated, something with cleaner, more modern lines, but she was clear about one thing: it still needed to feel like her ring. Not a replacement. A renewal.
The Appointment
This is where every custom remake begins — with a conversation. Not about metal weights or stone dimensions, but about what the piece means and what the person wants to feel when they wear it. We talk about lifestyle, about aesthetics, about what they love and what they're ready to let go of. By the end of that first appointment we have something more valuable than a brief — we have a real understanding of the person we're making for.
The Design
After the appointment I went away and designed the updated setting. This is the part of the process that happens quietly, away from the counter — sketching, refining, thinking about how the proportions will sit on the hand, how the light will move through the stone, how the new lines will honour the spirit of the original without simply copying it. The design went back to the customer for approval before a single piece of metal was touched.
Preparing the Stone
Once the design was approved, we had the aquamarine repolished. Years of wear had taken some of the brilliance from the surface, and before setting a stone into a new piece we always want it at its very best. The difference a professional repolish makes is remarkable — it's like watching the stone wake up.
Creating the Ring
With the stone ready and the design approved, we got to work. The new setting was created, the piece assembled, and her original aquamarine — along with her original stones — set into its new home. Every element of the finished ring was made to work together: the pear-shaped aquamarine at the centre, the diamond halo catching the light around it, the yellow gold band giving the whole piece warmth.
The Result
The ring you see in the photo is the same stone she walked in with. The same memories, the same sentiment — just reborn into something she'll wear every single day without hesitation.
